- A light phenomenon, which occurs occasionally at an altitude of 80-1000 km in
- the ionosphere around the North and South Poles.
- Auroral activity is usually accompanied by rapid variations in the Earth's
- magnetosphere. The Sun is the original energy source for these phenomena.
- The processes causing auroral luminosity are in principle the same as in neon
- lights. Energetic electrons precipitate along the geomagnetic field lines from
- higher altitudes down to the ionosphere and collide there with atomic oxygen and
- molecular nitrogen. The collisions excite the molecules and atoms to higher,
- transient energy levels. In the transitions back to the ground level, light is
- emitted.
